Thanks to my friend Simonna and her staff appreciation dinner, as of five days ago we are now proud owners of the coolest prize imaginable, an iPad,
which as you can imagine has been consuming much of my time this week. I consider myself an early adopter and heavy tech user, I hadn’t anticipated getting this device anytime in the near future.

Offline gmail service that was added just few weeks ago is a nice feature that will be able to add some working hours during this kind of problems. If you look around on the net, you will find TONS of sites offering "US Bank account opening kits", usually in the form of ebooks which are 90% of the time out of date.

The reason is because most of them are simply send you to eTrade Financial in order to open a brokerage account. This used to be a good choice a few months ago however E*Trade did not open accounts for non US residents anymore.

E*Trade are a brokerage company and they want clients who are serious about buying and selling stocks and options. They are happy to help clients who use these features because this is where E*Trade makes their money but they most definitely do not want to see people opening trading accounts and never using them to conduct any trades.

E*Trade also are no longer letting people fund their account with cheques that come from businesses (such as Clickbank) and the websites that claim that this is possible have not been updated.

Another disadvantage with E*Trade is that to apply for a Visa Debit card you must deposit a minimum of $1,000 which is often above the budget of most people.

HSBC do provide customers in many countries with $US account but not from a US branch. This means that whilst you can send and receive money in $US you cannot connect the account with most internet service providers like PayPal, 2Checkout etc. You will also not be able to cash a $US quickly as it can take many weeks to go through the US clearing system.

HSBC suggested that it may be possible to contact a US branch of HSBC and ask if they can contact HSBC in your home country to make an application however unless you have a long history with HSBC and can show them that you will be using the account significantly it is unlikely your application will be approved.

Bank of America are happy to provide US Bank accounts however you have to physically go to a branch in America to apply. They have an online application process but if you don't have a social security number and US drivers licence you are unable to complete it.

Wells Fargo will very reluctantly allow non-Americans to open an account with them if you are prepared to jump through a lot of hoops. You'll have forms to complete and you need to provide 2 bank references, statements for the last 6 months and notarized documents. I looked into this but seeing as it costs me $50 for each notarized document I decided that the cost to apply to this free account would be over $100!

iPhone: The Unlock Heard 'Round the World

No one ever doubted that the iPhone would be unlocked. It was only a matter of time before someone figured out how to crack the armor that heretofore has kept iPhone users from popping in a SIM card other than the iPhone-specific one that AT&T Wireless supplies with every new iPhone.

It seems that the team of someones at iPhoneSimFree.com are the first to successfully pull off this feat. The group says it has unlocked the phone, and will be releasing its software for sale starting next week.

Unlocking the iPhone dramatically widens the phone's appeal. For one, it means that you won't be tied to AT&T Wireless' services and network; you can use whatever local GSM network operates best for your needs--and potentially save money while doing so. Once it's been unlocked, you can take the phone with you anywhere, and pop in the SIM card of choice. For me, that would mean sticking with T-Mobile, where I already have a family plan and a service I don't want to change. For others, that may mean inserting a SIM purchased locally while traveling in Italy.

While we haven't tried this unlock yet ourselves, technology blog Engadget has given it a try, and found that the unlock works as advertised. Notably, Engadget says that at the moment, the hack appears "restore-resistant"--meaning you won't have to re-hack your phone after you apply an iPhone update. This is key to the success of any iPhone unlock process; Apple appears well on its way towards having multiple iPhone updates over time, and each software update so far has managed to undo any existing hacks on the iPhone.

I'll be interested to see what the response will be from Apple and AT&T Wireless. Considering you still have to buy the iPhone with a two-year AT&T Wireless contract, I'm not clear on how much of an advantage the iPhone unlock will be to the average consumer. You'll still have to pay to get out of your AT&T contract--which in turn will raise your overall cost-of-ownership on the iPhone.

Another consideration--if you plan to use the iPhone's Internet access over the cellular network--you'll want to pay for an unlimited data plan. The iPhone's Safari browser delivers the real, graphical Internet--which translates into lots of megabytes of data being transferred via the network. If you don't have unlimited data access, I'd shudder to think about the overage charges.

The PowerShot SD430 Digital Elph Wireless is the latest in Canon's popular range of Digital Elph point-and-shoot cameras. Like many other camera companies, Canon has been adding wireless functionality to its cameras, and the SD430 comes with a built-in 802.11b adapter for wireless printing with selected printers or for transmitting images to a PC. The feature works pretty well, but it ends up being a pricey convenience for a 5-megapixel camera with low battery life.

Using the wireless connection, you can transfer images to a PC with a few button presses. It's a pretty speedy process: In my informal tests, transferring ten images of the highest size and image quality took about 25 seconds. And you don't have to do anything on the PC, because you handle it all through the camera interface, including choosing the images to send. (You can select individual images, just new images, all images, or wallpaper, which transfers an image and sets it as the Windows wallpaper.) Transferring and printing images is easy even when the PC is in another room. In my typical wood-frame house, the wireless adapter had a range of about 40 feet--enough to let me take a picture in the garden and print it in the living room.

The camera comes with remote control software that allows you to manage every aspect of the camera over the wireless connection, including zooming and focus. This also provides a live preview of the image, so the feature could be handy for all sorts of useful (or nefarious) purposes. The software automatically saves the images to the PC (instead of to the memory card), so even if someone finds the hidden camera, you still have the photos as evidence.

To print wirelessly, you plug the included wireless USB print adapter into a Canon Selphy or Pixma printer (the adapter won't work with printers from other manufacturers), connect wirelessly, and then select 'print' from the camera's LCD menu. Again, the process is simple and swift: My test images printed as quickly over the wireless connection as they did over a USB cable.

But the feature is not without its quirks and limitations. Because the included software and USB connection are necessary to set the wireless connection up, you can't use a friend's wireless network to access his PC while visiting his house. I also had a problem on one system in which the camera and the PC failed to connect until I manually configured the Windows Firewall, but thereafter they worked together without a hitch.

The wireless adapter adds little bulk to the camera. At 0.8-inch thick, the SD430 is small enough to fit into a shirt pocket, and at just over 5 ounces, it won't weigh you down. The design of the camera looks much like that of other Digital Elph models, sporting a solid aluminum case and a telescoping lens with a built-in lens cover. The only major addition is a blue LED on the left side of the case under a loop that illuminates when the wireless connection is active.

The image quality of the 5-megapixel SD430 was above average; test images were well exposed, with good color and plenty of detail. The zoom range is 5.8mm to 17mm (equivalent to 35mm to 105mm on a film camera). Battery life was unimpressive, though, with the battery running out after a disappointing 192 images. While that's enough for a couple of days of serious shooting, you'll want to keep the charger on hand, especially if you're using the wireless feature. The wireless adapter consumed a fair amount of power--using the remote control application ran down a fully charged battery in 65 minutes.

The zoom and focus mechanisms are a little noisy: Both buzzed annoyingly while in use, and the focusing noise was particularly irritating when I used the optical viewfinder. It makes taking candid shots a problem, too, as the buzzing noise could spook the local wildlife.

At $500, the SD430 is a bit on the expensive side for a 5-megapixel camera, and you seem to be paying a big premium for the wireless features. It's $100 more than the Nikon P2, which also includes wireless. However, in our tests the Canon had a slight edge over the Nikon in producing high-quality images, and the SD430's comparatively smaller design makes it an appealing choice for people who want a pocket-size camera and don't mind paying extra.
